Tie-Dyed Locks

This summer we’ve seen a lot of dyed hair, but not just normal blonde or caramel highlights. We’re talking about teal blue tips, bright pink highlights, and blonde ombre. These dye jobs can be complicated which is why they might scare some twisted sisters away. The key with dying curls, like any other curly hairstyle, is to play into your natural curl. Let your dyed hair twist in and out to create swirls of color within your locks. Check out these color blocking hairstyles for curls:

Ombre and Dip-Dyed

One of the most popular dye jobs we’ve seen this summer is ombre and dip-dyed hair. Ombre is when you blend your natural hair into the dye. This creates a gradual transition from your natural color at your roots to a saturated color at the bottom.  Dip-dyed, on the other hand, is blunter. With dip-dyed it literally looks like you dipped the ends of your hair into another color. Both of these hairstyles look great with curls! In fact, the combination of natural and saturated color helps define your curls as they twist into each other.

Highlighter Highlights

Another option is colored highlights. If done right, this look works extremely well with curly hair, but you have to be careful of the placement of your highlights. Katy Perry’s highlights are not placed right on top of her hair; instead they are under her first layer of hair. By doing this they peak out and curl into the rest of her hair. It’s also important not to overdo the highlights. Although she has multiple colors going, she only has a couple of strands on each side so it’s not too overwhelming.

All or Nothing

Dying your whole head one color says confident, fun, and sassy. When dying your hair a bright color, like Rihanna’s red, make sure you pick the right color for your complexion. Unlike the other styles, if you pick a shade that is too close or too far from your skin tone it can wash you out or overpower you. If you aren’t sure what color to dye your hair ask a stylist or even try highlights first to see if it’s the right shade for you.
